THE EFFICIENCY OF ELECTRONIC DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM BY THE NIGERIAN IMMIGRATION SERVICE

By: Ronaldson Diete-Spiff, Esq.

The Minister of Interior, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola in conjunction with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) made a public introduction of the Electronic Data Management System (EDMS) as part of its code of conduct guiding its officers. The expectant result of the introduction of the EDMS is to improve the efficiency of its workers who would display a high level of clarity, dedication and punctuality in their operations of service owing to the fact that their activities are online and every personnel detail would be easily accessible to superior officers electronically rather than the paper-based format the system is being known for. The essence of this is to monitor the activities of all officers and their assigned duties and the discharge of such duties professionally, and to also put them in check, in line with the code of conduct of the Nigerian Immigration Service.

The Comptroller General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede, further stated that until new innovations and practices are introduced into the system, NIS would be unable to confront the issues of migration and border control, thereby leading to poor and inefficient service delivery.

It is without doubt that the need for the introduction of the EDMS is coming at the right time when technological incursion in daily activities, business and service delivery, is at its peak. Officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service will now acquaint themselves with recent trends of proper documentation rather than the old paper-based system.
