The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) recently adopted the minimum cut-off marks for 2021 admissions sent by tertiary institutions. The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede displayed the minimum cut off marks adopted by tertiary institutions at the 2021 policy meeting held in Abuja. At the said policy meeting, it was agreed that the total fee payable for Post – Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) should not be more than N2, 000 (Two Thousand Naira).

The Registrar sounded a stern warning to institutions nursing the idea of going beyond the pegged Post-UTME fee during the meeting. According to him, “Nobody should charge more than N2,000. The total gross is N2, 000. It is not allowed by institutions to allow candidates to procure administrative charges. No institution is allowed to capture or demand any result upload. It is the one that we upload on caps that we will send to all of you. The biometrics supplied by jamb should be used for the exercise.”
Furthermore, In line with the new arrangement as agreed in the meeting, universities are not allowed to go below 120 and polytechnics and colleges of education, 100 as the agreed cut-off mark for admission.

It is no longer news that there is an uncertainty between the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and most universities in Nigeria in setting a standard unified cut-off mark. Thus, the step taken by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is indeed a welcome development in our tertiary educational systems. The implication is that there is no more uniform cut-off points as set by JAMB for 2021/2022 admissions for candidates seeking to gain admission into universities of their choice. Apart from being in line with international best practices in advanced countries, it will eradicate the lingering confusion between the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and most universities, especially with respect to cut-off points.
